Bird watching in Sattal

Sattal is one of the places that is close to big cities and shows a different form of nature –  the world of birds. The forest of Sattal is filled with oak trees, situated at the height of 1400 Metres due to which many birds come to breed from down South India throughout the summer, among these a lot of ‘Fly Catcher’ species, one of which is – Paradise Fly Catcher,   Many birds come here in winter from cold areas such as finches, raptors and warblers.

Bird Watching Places of Sattal

Studio Trail

This is the most famous area of Sattal among birders, many birds come here to bathe in the water, photographers from all over the world capture pictures of many birds here.

Bend Area

This road trail exhibits a lot of bird activity in the morning, as well as a view of ‘Garuda Tal’ and ‘Sattal’ and ‘Hanuman Tal’, this trail is very good for resident birds, beautiful birds like Scarlet Minivet are seen here almost dail

Panna Lake / Garur Tal

Rare species like Scaly Thrush in the winters make this place their home, then in the summer species of owls like – Brown Wood Owl.

Wild Kumaon Campus

Birds are also fed at some places in Sattal and there is also a birdbath, one such bird hide is also inside the WILD KUMAON campus.

Chanfi

chanfi is an amazing birding area for small Birds, warblers, and water-dependent Birds. Different topography in comparison to the Sattal region this area is home to different species which you don’t find in Sattal. Tawny Fish Owl, Little Forktail and Brown Dipper are some highlights from the area. a must-visit area if you are coming to Sattal.  

In a year, about 250 species are found in Sattal –
Some of the rarest summer species are Long-tailed Broadbill, Brown Wood Owl, Gray Croned Parinees, Mountain Scopes Owl, Mountain Hawk Eagle.
Some beautiful winter species are – Small Niltava, Rufous Bellied NIltava, Rufous-gorgeted Flycatcher, Golden Bush Robin, Common Green Magpie, Pink Browd Rosfinch.

Some exotic birds also live in the target of bird watchers in winter…. one of which is the Siberian rubythroat – this bird reaches Sattal from the upper cold regions of Europe and China. It looks very beautiful blooming in the middle and there is a desire in the mind to come out for a moment and see it.

There are other areas along with Satatal which are famous for birds and which are visited with the Satatal Bird Watching Tour –
Pangot, Chanfi, Ramgarh, Shyamkhet – These are the areas where there is very good boarding and many such species are found which are not found in Sattal.

Chanfi is famous for – Brown Dipper, the only species which breeds in winters here. 

The right time to visit Sattal and other vicinity area is :
Summer – April to June
In winter – November to March
